Acunna moves to Mexico's second division
Olympic hopeful and California native midfielder Isaac Acuna has moved from Club America to Merida FC, in the Mexican Second Division, for the next Clausura 2012 season, The Mexican Soccer Federation has confirmed that.
Acunna who is 22 years old played in six games for Club America in 2011 but was on the field for less than 70 minutes.
A native of Calexico, California, Acuna made headlines in August at Mexico, when he was suspended for a week from the America first-team squad for what mlsoccer.com called indiscipline.
Acuna told Yahoo Sports this fall that playing for either the U.S. National Team or Mexico's team are possibilities heading to the 2012 olympics.
"I am very interested in playing with U.S. National Team, but now i'm focused on playing with America so that they keep watching me" Acuna told Yahoo Sports in September "Of course i'm interested espeacially a National team like that".
And if both teams United States and Mexico wanted his international services?
"I would think about it" He said. "I'd talk with my parents and see what my best option would be".
Acuna's new team, based in the state of Yucatan, is an affiliate of Primera Division’s Atlante. Los Venados, as Merida are known, finished in 15th place in the Liga de Ascenso last season, with 13 points from 15 games.
